No need to tell you what a great pianist Jeff is, Nor what a funny man. So here is another side of him as described by his cohort, trombonist Jim Fryer, "Jeff plays the clown, but he is brilliant man. He has multiple degrees - in English literature, education and music. I can hardly pick up a book that he hasn't read." Think about that as he whips down the keyboard - or falls off the stool while reaching for a note that isn't there. |

The Frisco Jazz Band, which recorded for Edison in 1917, was different. Clarinetist Dan Levinson has captured that difference in his own arrangements written in the style of, not copies of, the Frisco Jazz Band. For dancers, obviously, but also a delight for listeners. |

Bring them back, you said, after we introduced this quartet of young musicians last year on the recommendation of Bob Draga. Under the leadership of clarinetist Michael Almich, they had quickly built up a reputation in their home territory of the Northwest. Now they are spreading farther afield. Find out why. |

One of the nicest persons we know, Neville demonstrates his gentlemanliness in his playing, especially when sharing the bandstand in a two-piano set. Rather than trying to overwhelm his partner, he cooperates with him in creating memorable music. His sets are not to be missed. |

| HIGH SIERRA JAZZ BAND | Three Rivers, California |
|
With its hot front line, High Sierra has become one of the most popular bands on the festival circuit. But don't overlook their rock-solid rhythm section, who have been together for 33 years, certainly some kind of record. Not the least of their attractions is leader Pieter Meijer's Dutch accent. |

This two-beat band hearkens back to the mid-'60s when Doug Finke, the leader, played with the Original Salty Dogs and Bob Scobey's Frisco Jazz Band. Doug spent 32 years away from music to rear his family and pursue a business career. His band has become a festival favorite since he returned 13 years.ago. |

"Charming!" We've said so before, but we can think of no other word that sums up so well this husband and wife team - unless it is "talented." At their sets, you may hear lyrical ragtime, sentimental ballads, raucus jazz, even - dare we mention it? - that other kind of "classics" imported from Europe. |

| JERRY KRAHN QUARTET | Nashville, Tennessee |
|
Jerry plays an authentic no-amp archtop guitar, the kind used by old masters like Eddie Lang and Django Reinhart. The distinctive "chunk" sound coming through the f-hole is reason enough not to miss him. His inspired arrangements of 1920-30 standards, as well as of contemporary tunes and his own originals, are just icing on the cake. |

When you need a respite from the driving sounds of brass, drop in on this group that keeps alive the "Gypsy jazz" of France in the '30s. In the tradition of the Hot Club of Paris, violin and guitar trade the lead; a bass and a second guitar back them up. And, boy! do they swing!. |

| DAN LEVINSON'S SONS OF ROSY | New York, New York |
|
This is a tradition with the Orange County Classic. Whenever Dan Levinson is with us, he puts together a tribute to the late reedman Rosy McHargue, who was his mentor. Rosy has another connection to the Classic. Festival Director John Dieball promoted several birthday parties honoring Rosy. Yes, these are sentimental affairs, but not maudlin. Rosy wouldn't like that. He was an entertainer as well as a musician. |

British-born Sonny is an authority on the history of blues and Boogie Woogie piano so you can trust his introductions to songs to be accurate. He not only plays the blues, he sings them in his own style, treating them seriously without parody or corny imitation. |

PIETER MEIJERS QUARTET with Brady & Cocuzzi |
Hollywood, California |
|
Brady with Pieter, wow! And with Pieter's quartet having grown to a quintet, double wow! The addition of drummer Ray Templin frees up John Cocuzzi to play vibes. Notice that Cocuzzi, Templin and Randy Morris are all pianists. Expect some switching around, especially when they are in the big Pacific Room, which has two big grand pianos on stage. |

They have been on the festival circuit so long - 34 years - that there is little need to introduce them. Leader Chet Jaeger is noted (notorious?) for his humor. He always brings in a few new jokes, but his audiences demand some be told over and over - often just so they can shout out the punch lines. |

| ROB RIO | Los Angeles, California |
|
Known as the "Boss of the Boogie", this dynamic pianist has been playing the boogie-woogie and jump blues of the '40s and '50s for more than 30 years. His eight-to-the bar rhythms will shake your frame if you are merely sitting and listening, but boogie evolved as a dance music in the turpentine camps of east Texas to entertain the loggers and their "ladies". Here's a chance to relive a forgotten era. |

The Lilleys, Mike the trombonist, and Steve the trumpet player, are mirror twins. Mike is left-hand, Steve right-handed. Nevertheless, they think alike in fronting this Midwestern-style band. They are noted for the tight charts that their pianist, Steve Majchrzak writes but they can and do arrange on the fly. "Some of our best work seems to happen that way", Steve says. |

There aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe the Titans. Fun, yes, but superb musicianship also, from heart-stopping stomps to soul-stirring ballads. Warning, their sets are often standing-room-only, or sometimes "sorry, no more room". Go early. |

Their stock in trade is the classics, King Oliver, Jelly Roll, Armstrong, but they are not loath to toss in a ballad, pop tune or novelty now and then for variety. This is not a funny band, but it is fun. Listen carefully. Sometimes they surprise even themselves. |

Formed nine years ago to celebrate the music of Lu Watters, they maintain his two-horn lead and use many of his original arrangements. Like Lu, they focus on such versatile musicians as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Kid Ory, Scott Joplin, and Turk Murphy. Historically significant but more importantly, exciting! |
